Undirected blog #2

A piece of art that really interested me was the funerary mask of Tutankhamun.  I have seen it once before in a book that I was reading for a class.  I love intricate the design is on it and the detail that was put in to it.  The facial expression seems very peaceful and serene to me.  I am glad that it does not give off a scary or over powerful feel.  Considering he was a the most important figure at the time and ruled the land, it easily could have had a more stern facial expression.  Although they are very different, it made me think of the Lincoln Memorial.  The same is true with the facial expression of Abraham Lincoln.  He was a very powerful man and changed history forever.  His face reminds me of a calm person who had much authority.  Neither of the two give off the impression of people who abused their power.  Just like the statue in the voice thread; both are able to give off an authoritative feel simple by the way they were made.  After reading about the mask and the background behind it, I have a new found interest in Egyptian art.  Now I really want to go to Egypt and check out all of the pyramids!

  1. The mask of Tut is one of my favorite works of art. The entire cofine used for the King made of 3 peices each used theis famous mask image. To think that back in those days this kind of crafsmanship could be dome is amazing. I had had a friend who travled to Egypt and the pictures he took made me want to go there myself. I like how you are able to read the expressions of the mask as most people just look at it for what it is made of. The face is what makes it art.

  2. Omg! I was going to do the Abraham Lincoln memmorial too! For a different piece of art though. I wrote about what you just stated: abe's stern face & how it represents authority in my voicethread. I've actually been there. & I would also love to visit Egypt, who wouldn't? Great post & comparision! :)

  3. I love the connection you made between Lincoln's memorial and the funneray mask. I felt as if the mask of Tutankhamun was a bit softer in it's facial features, almost like the women were portrayed in the art of the Greeks. The intricate detail and fine carvings made on Lincoln's face, on the other hand, gives off more rigid, stable and powerful feelings.
